Carbon monoxide(CO) sensors play an important role in industry, agriculture and atmospheric environment monitoring. In daily applications, electrochemical carbon monoxide sensors are the most widely used.
Carbon monoxide detection in the civil field
In the civilian sector, carbon monoxide sensors are widely used in household carbon monoxide alarms and gas water heaters, monitoring carbon monoxide concentrations in real time to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Electrochemical carbon monoxide sensors utilize the oxidation of the carbon monoxide gas at the sensor's working electrode. The current generated by the electrochemical reaction is proportional to the gas's concentration and follows Faraday's law. By measuring the current, the gas's concentration can be determined, making them ideal for civilian carbon monoxide detection.

Carbon Monoxide Detection in the Industrial Field
Under normal conditions, carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and poorly soluble gas in water. At room temperature, it does not react with acids or bases, but it can form explosive mixtures with air. Exposure to open flames or high temperatures can cause combustion and explosion, making it a flammable and explosive gas.
Carbon monoxide concentration measurement is essential in industrial settings, including the petroleum, petrochemical, metallurgical, and mining industries. When using an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor, carbon monoxide and oxygen undergo corresponding redox reactions at the working and counter electrodes, releasing charge and generating an electric current. The magnitude of the generated current is proportional to the carbon monoxide concentration, and the measured current can be used to determine the carbon monoxide concentration.
Electrochemical sensors offer low power consumption, high accuracy and sensitivity, and a wide linear range, making them suitable for industrial carbon monoxide detection. Industrial-grade carbon monoxide sensors also have more stringent performance requirements than those used in the consumer sector.
