Working Principle of Electrochemical Oxygen Sensors
Electrochemical oxygen sensors quantify oxygen concentration by converting it into an electrical signal through an electrochemical reaction. Specifically, when oxygen molecules in a gas mixture pass through a semipermeable membrane on one side of the sensor and enter the electrolyte, the oxygen is reduced to hydroxide ions (OH⁻) at the cathode, generating electrons. These electrons flow back to the anode through an external circuit, forming a closed loop. The current generated by the reduction and oxidation reactions is directly related to the oxygen concentration entering the electrolyte: the higher the oxygen concentration, the greater the current generated. By accurately measuring and converting this current, the oxygen concentration in the gas mixture can be determined.
Applications of Oxygen Sensors
Oxygen sensors are quietly changing our lifestyles and ensuring our safety. They are not just high-tech products, but also guardians of our health, safety, and environment. Industrial safety is a major application area for oxygen. Whether in petrochemical plants, steel mills, or mines, controlling and monitoring oxygen concentrations is crucial. In these environments, oxygen sensors not only ensure production efficiency but also detect abnormal oxygen concentrations to prevent accidents such as fires and explosions. Furthermore, in environmental monitoring, electrochemical oxygen sensors act as monitors, collecting oxygen data at various monitoring points throughout a city. Environmental workers use this data to assess atmospheric conditions. Oxygen sensors are also playing an important role in other applications, such as smart homes and ecological farming. These applications demonstrate that electrochemical oxygen sensors are infiltrating every aspect of our lives, and their application prospects are vast. With technological advances, we can expect future oxygen sensors to be even smaller, more accurate, and more durable.
