Application of electrochemical hydrogen sensors in the power industry

Hydrogen (chemical formula H₂) is an elemental gas composed of hydrogen atoms. At room temperature and pressure, it is colorless, odorless, sparingly soluble in water, and highly flammable. Its density is approximately 0.089 g/L (under standard conditions), only 1/14 the density of air, making it the least dense gas known. Due to its low density, hydrogen was once widely used to fill airships and balloons, but its flammability posed certain safety hazards, and it has been gradually replaced by helium in these applications. In chemical reactions, hydrogen exhibits both reducing properties (such as reacting with highly electronegative nonmetals) and oxidizing properties (such as reacting with active metals).

In the modern power industry, electrochemical hydrogen sensors show broad application prospects, extending their role to energy storage, industrial safety, and many other fields. Hydrogen, as a high-quality energy storage medium, possesses outstanding advantages such as high energy density, fast response speed, and flexible application, and is therefore frequently used in energy storage within power systems. Electrochemical hydrogen sensors are one of the key technologies for ensuring the safe and efficient utilization of hydrogen.

With the advancement of new energy technologies, hydrogen energy, due to its low-carbon, high-efficiency, and renewable characteristics, is increasingly valued and promoted by various countries and related industries. In the power sector, hydrogen fuel cell technology, as a highly efficient and clean energy solution that only produces water and electricity as byproducts, has become one of the important directions for future power production, possessing significant development potential. By deploying electrochemical hydrogen sensors, the operating status of fuel cells can be effectively monitored, thereby improving power output efficiency and preventing operational failures.

Furthermore, electrochemical hydrogen sensors can also be used to monitor the hydrogen concentration generated during the operation of energy storage battery packs. Currently, energy storage batteries are widely used in scenarios such as power peak shaving and grid backup; however, battery aging, overcharging, and over-discharging can lead to hydrogen release, and hydrogen accumulation can easily cause safety accidents. Real-time monitoring of hydrogen concentration helps in timely early warning and eliminate potential risks. Similarly, this sensor can also be used to detect hydrogen leaks in power equipment such as transformers, further ensuring the safe and stable operation of the equipment.

MQ-E3-H2 Electrochemical H2 Sensor

Addressing the power industry's need for hydrogen detection, Tensensor's electrochemical hydrogen sensor MQ-E3 and UART output module TE03-H2 can accurately monitor hydrogen concentration, effectively preventing personal injury and equipment damage caused by hydrogen accumulation.
